The IC’s Mission

To empower persons with disabilities, to maximize their independence within the community, and to remove barriers which prevent integration and equal opportunity.

The Independence Center

ABOUT The Independence CENTER

In 1987 The Independence Center (The IC) was founded by people with disabilities who saw a need for independent living services and home health care services in the community. From the first independent living services, provided from our Executive Director’s home, we have grown through the years and several locations to our current center at Tejon and Las Animas, just south of downtown Colorado Springs. The IC serves people with all disabilities in El Paso, Teller, Kiowa, Kit Carson, Park, Lincoln, Cheyenne and Elbert counties and over 500 people annually. The IC is a non-profit 501(c)(3), consumer controlled, community-based center for independent living in the Pikes Peak Region.

The IC was founded to help people with disabilities maintain their independence in our community. Our purpose is to empower people with disabilities to live independently, and to enhance options and quality of life. The IC is a vigorous participant in local efforts to remove barriers for people with disabilities. We are strongly committed to consumer involvement at all levels and, to that end, consumers inform management and the Board of Directors about needed services, provide peer support and are involved in advocacy for people with disabilities.

The IC’s Home Care division is a Colorado licensed home care provider that specializes in long term care in the home. The IC was first certified in 1987 by Medicare and Medicaid to provide home health care services and continues these services today with over 125 consumers receiving home health care services.

Since its beginning, The IC has served all people equally without regard to race, color, religion, creed, sex, age, marital status, national origin, ancestry, political affiliation, sexual orientation or disabling condition, and will continue to do so.
